St. Xavier High School is gearing up for the 2026 football season, marking the first year under head coach Brian Landis, who takes over after longtime mentor Kevin Wallace departed.
Transition and Expectations
The program, a perennial powerhouse in Kentucky, enters the new campaign after a period of turnover, having graduated several key contributors from its recent championship years.
While the roster has seen turnover, the defense returns a core that should remain a strength, anchored by standouts such as Henry Atkins, Jamari Carroll, Te'Are Wilson and George Hale.
Quarterback Competition
On the offensive side, the Tigers boast a deep quarterback room featuring Will Burmester, Beau Artman and junior transfer William Shoptaw, who brings a solid sophomore résumé from Hazard.
Shoptaw’s 2025 performance included 210 completions out of 346 attempts for 2,798 yards and 23 touchdowns, suggesting he could provide immediate stability at the helm.
Senior running back Cooper Yates also returns, having amassed 500 rushing yards and 15 receptions for 210 yards and two scores last season.
The schedule promises marquee matchups against traditional rivals Owensboro, Male, Trinity, Boyle County and DuPont Manual, setting the stage for a competitive slate.
