The Georgia Bulldogs have been dealt a blow to their running back depth as senior transfer Dante Dowdell remains sidelined by serious injuries sustained in an off‑campus accident during the team’s offseason break.
Coach Kirby Smart voiced his concern for Dowdell’s recovery while emphasizing the player’s character, noting that the senior’s extensive college résumé includes more than a thousand rushing yards and multiple touchdowns.
Dowdell’s absence leaves a void after he topped the team’s spring game with 61 yards and a touchdown, and after posting 560 yards and three scores in the previous season.
The roster does retain several capable backs, including junior Nate Frazier, who amassed 947 yards and six touchdowns last year, and redshirt sophomore Chauncey Bowens, who contributed 108 yards on 16 carries against Georgia Tech.
Freshman Dwight Phillips and walk‑on Bo Walker also entered the conversation, while center Drew Bobo expressed enthusiasm about the group’s potential.
The backfield also suffered another setback when edge‑rusher Amaris Williams, a transfer from Auburn, was lost for the season to an ACL injury earlier in the spring.
A New Era of Running Backs
Frazier’s consistency over the final six games, highlighted by a 181‑yard effort at Mississippi State, positions him as a primary option, while Bowens’ versatility adds depth.
Bobo’s comments underscore the coaching staff’s confidence that the group can step up, even as they navigate the challenges posed by the missing transfers.
