Since the first championship in 1964, the Alter Knights have compiled a record that places them among the most storied high school programs in the nation. With 32 Ohio High School Athletic Association district titles earned over 62 years, the team has consistently turned regional competition into a showcase of talent. Their trophy case includes four state championships — 1978, 1999, 2001 and the most recent crown in 2024 — each marking a distinct era of excellence.
The foundation of that success rests on two Hall of Fame‑caliber coaches. Joe Petrocelli, who steered the program for more than eight hundred victories, built a culture of relentless defense and disciplined offense. Decades later, Eric Coulter inherited the mantle and guided the Knights to a historic 2024 state title, cementing his place in the lineage of champions.
Among the standout athletes who have worn the blue and gold, Greg Laravie emerged as a dominant force in the early 1970s, averaging 15.8 points and 12.4 rebounds over 63 games and anchoring the squad that captured the program’s first district title in 1973. Andy Meyer graduated as the all‑time leading scorer with 1,477 points and remains the franchise’s top rebounder, field‑goal maker and free‑throw shooter. Jim Paxson Jr. led the team to a 46‑2 record and the program’s inaugural state tournament appearance in 1975, while John Paxson earned Parade and McDonald’s All‑American honors in 1979 and capped his high school career with a game‑high 25 points in the state semifinal. Jaaron Simmons finished his prep career as the all‑time leading scorer in the Greater Catholic League with 1,612 points, and Keith Waleskowski delivered a dramatic game‑winning shot with one second left in overtime during the 1999 Division II final.
