A decisive third period
Canada opened its latest edition of the men's hockey world championship with a commanding performance against Denmark in Fribourg, Switzerland, handing the Europeans a 5‑1 defeat that underscored the team’s resurgence.
The scoring burst began just 28 seconds into the third period when Porter Martone slipped the puck past the Danish netminder, igniting the crowd.
Gabriel Vilardi doubled the lead two minutes later, and defenseman Denton Mateychuk added a third goal after a perfect feed from Sidney Crosby, who contributed four assists throughout the contest.
Ryan O'Reilly and Parker Wotherspoon capped the onslaught with individual goals, sealing a five‑goal stretch that left Denmark scrambling.
Goaltending and young talent
Teenage captain Macklin Celebrini also chipped in two assists, while goaltender Jet Greaves turned away 15 shots to preserve the clean sheet for Canada.
Denmark's response
Denmark managed a solitary goal from Nick Olesen, but the effort was insufficient as Canada’s offense overwhelmed the opposition.
Looking ahead
With three straight victories, the Canadian squad now turns its attention to a Thursday showdown against Norway, aiming to extend its winning streak.
