With the 2026 season still a distant horizon, Penn State’s football program has turned its gaze backward to a game that still resonates in the locker room.
On a crisp autumn night in 2008, the Nittany Lions erupted for a 46‑17 victory over Michigan, snapping a nine‑game winless streak that had haunted the team since 1996.
A game that rewrote the narrative
The offensive onslaught was led by running back Evan Royster, who carved 174 yards on the ground and crossed the end zone once, while quarterback Daryll Clark added 171 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Wide receiver Deon Butler contributed 108 receiving yards, and Stephfon Green capped the scoring with an 80‑yard screen pass that left the Wolverines reeling.
The spotlight also fell on a young talent: true freshman linebacker Evan Wolff, who donned the iconic No. 46 jersey, a number that had become symbolic of the team’s resurgence.
