Peter Farkas has been named Assistant Director of Basketball Operations at Stony Brook University, a move that underscores the program’s intent to bolster its coaching ranks with experienced talent.
A Proven Track Record
During his four seasons at the University of Akron, Farkas helped the Zips secure three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, capture three Mid‑American Conference tournament titles and claim a regular‑season conference championship.
His contributions extended beyond wins; he played a key role in the development of standout players such as Enrique Freeman and Nate Johnson, both of whom saw marked improvements under his guidance.
Roots in Division III
Before his tenure at Akron, Farkas served as an assistant coach at SUNY Brockport, where he helped guide the team to two Division III NCAA tournament berths. He also leveraged his recruiting network in Long Island and New York City, landing commitments from future conference rookie‑of‑the‑year winners Danny Ashley and Mekhi Beckett.
Farkas earned his bachelor’s degree in Sports Management with a minor in coaching and media production from SUNY Brockport, followed by a master’s in Sports Science/Physical Education from the University of Akron in May 2024.
What This Means for Stony Brook
The hiring is expected to elevate the Seawolves’ recruiting reach and provide a clear pathway for player development as the program looks to compete more aggressively in the America East Conference. Athletic Director Geno Ford praised Farkas’s blend of analytical acumen and hands‑on coaching experience.
University President Dr. Christine McKenna highlighted the appointment as part of a broader strategy to invest in athletics infrastructure, noting that “Peter’s proven ability to build winning cultures aligns perfectly with Stony Brook’s aspirations.”
