A Summer of Firsts
The University of Arizona men’s basketball team will depart for Lithuania on August 14, beginning a nine‑day itinerary that blends competition with cultural immersion. The tour, made possible by a recent NCAA rule change that permits annual overseas trips, marks the Wildcats’ first foray into Europe since the program’s inception.
During their stay, Arizona will contest three exhibition matches: a clash with the Lithuania B Team in Jonava on August 19, a showdown against the Ukraine senior national squad in Kedaninai on August 20, and a high‑profile encounter with the Lithuania senior national team in Alytus on August 22. Each game offers a different tactical challenge and a chance to gauge the squad’s readiness for the 2026‑27 season.
Testing the Wildcats Against Senior Powerhouses
The schedule pits the Wildcats against seasoned national sides, providing a stern test of depth and resilience. Facing the Lithuania B Team in Jonava offers a glimpse of emerging talent, while the subsequent matches against Ukraine and the senior Lithuanian side will expose Arizona to physical, fast‑paced basketball styles distinct from the Pac‑12.
Coach Tommy Lloyd emphasized that the tour is designed to accelerate player development and foster team chemistry. “We’re using this opportunity to accelerate our development and give our players a global perspective,” Lloyd said, noting that the experience could prove pivotal as the Wildcats aim to contend for a Pac‑12 title.
Lithuanian Roots in the Roster
Adding a personal dimension, the roster includes three Lithuanian‑born players — Motiejus Krivas, Ugnius Jarusevicius and the returning duo Azuolas and Tautvilas Tubelis — who bring a blend of domestic experience and NBA‑level ambition. Krivas, a former Zalgiris Kaunas standout, joins the Wildcats after a standout collegiate career, while Jarusevicius arrives as a transfer with a reputation for versatile play.
Beyond the hardwood, the team will explore Kaunas, Lithuania’s second‑largest city, sampling its historic Old Town, vibrant cafés and the Nemunas River promenade. The itinerary also includes a brief excursion to the Baltic coast, allowing the players to experience local traditions and foster camaraderie off the court.
The tour coincides with other international engagements in the region; the University of Michigan, the current national champion, is slated to play a series of games in Lithuania and Croatia from August 21‑29, underscoring the growing trend of U.S. programs seeking competitive overseas experiences.
