Will Stein, the newly hired head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats, arrived with a clear message: the program’s long‑standing inability to beat the University of Tennessee must end. Stein says he understands the recruiting pipelines and the winning culture needed to compete at the highest level, and he is confident that his vision can rewrite a 26‑86‑9 all‑time deficit.
The challenge is steep. Kentucky has managed only a 2‑11 record against Tennessee under predecessor Mark Stoops, and the overall series stands at 26 wins, 86 losses and nine ties in favor of the Volunteers. Since 1973 the Wildcats are 4‑23 in Lexington, and in the 21st century they are just 2‑8 in close games on the road.
Stein’s first test will come on November 7, when the Wildcats travel to Neyland Stadium in Knoxville. The venue, known for its electric crowd, will be the stage for Stein’s first opportunity to prove his assertions on the field.
Adding a personal layer, Stein’s father, Matt Stein, was a member of the 1984 Wildcats squad that famously upset Tennessee, a memory that fuels the new coach’s determination. He also cites the city of Lexington as an ideal recruiting hub, insisting that its community and culture can attract top talent.
Beyond the rivalry, Stein envisions a broader resurgence for Kentucky football, one that could restore the program’s national relevance and bring renewed excitement to fans across the Commonwealth.
