Former San Francisco Giants infielder Hwang Jae‑gyun is set to retire later this year, bringing to a close a career that spanned almost two decades in the Korean Baseball Organization.
Nicknamed the ‘Iron Man’ for his relentless durability, Hwang will be honored with a retirement ceremony on August 8 when his former team, the Suwon Lotte Giants, host a special tribute.
A career built on endurance
Hwang’s reputation for playing through injury and logging heavy minutes earned him the moniker ‘Iron Man’ among fans and peers alike, a testament to his physical resilience.
Over his KBO tenure he suited up for the Kiwoon Heroes, Lotte, and KT Wiz, capturing multiple championships and a 2020 Golden Glove award that recognized his defensive excellence.
In 2017 he signed a minor‑league deal with the Giants, earned a brief call‑up to the majors and posted an 8‑for‑52 batting line with one home run and five RBIs before returning to Korea.
Leadership and international play
Beyond his playing days, Hwang captained KT Wiz to its first-ever championship in 2021, guiding a young roster to the title and cementing his legacy as a mentor as well as a player.
He also represented South Korea in several international tournaments, bringing his experience to the national team on the world stage.
