Springfield has announced the appointment of Lane Murphy as its new boys basketball coach, replacing Anthony Griggs, who steered the Yellow Jackets for three seasons.
Murphy, a standout guard at East Robertson High School before embarking on a coaching career, most recently served as an assistant at Liberty Creek, where he helped the Wolves compile a 61‑33 record over the past three years.
A Family Affair in Robertson County
Beyond his coaching résumé, Murphy expressed a deep affection for Robertson County, citing its community spirit and basketball tradition as central to his decision to return.
His father, Neil Murphy, a former East Robertson coach, will join his son’s staff as an assistant, adding a layer of familiarity and continuity to the program.
The Yellow Jackets enjoyed their most successful campaign since 2019 last season, finishing 17‑13, and Murphy hopes to build on that momentum.
Adding intrigue, Lane’s brother Luke Murphy, a former baseball standout now progressing through the Double‑A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, underscores a multi‑sport athletic lineage in the household.
Seth Massey, under whom Murphy assisted for three seasons, praised the new coach’s leadership, suggesting the hire could usher in a new era of competitiveness for Springfield basketball.
