The New Jersey American Legion Tournament delivered a heart‑stopping contest on Tuesday night as Hamilton Post 31 squared off against the defending state champions, Cherry Hill Post 372.
Right‑hander Jacob Luyber, a 17‑year‑old from Hamilton, turned in a stellar outing, holding the opposition scoreless deep into the game and leaving the visitors just one strike away from a stunning upset.
The momentum shifted in the seventh inning when Cherry Hill’s Carson Michalski ripped a triple that tied the score, and a subsequent errant throw by Hayden Baker briefly gave Hamilton a 2‑1 lead before the champions rallied.
Ben Nitti’s single in the fourth had put Hamilton on the board, and his subsequent hit in the seventh briefly nudged the lead to 2‑1, but the advantage evaporated as Aiden Ryder’s relief appearance allowed the winning run to cross the plate.
Earlier, Brody Connors and J.J. McLaughlin had helped Cherry Hill build an initial edge, while Will Solak retired ten of the first twelve batters he faced, underscoring the high caliber of pitching on both sides.
Hamilton’s manager, Rick Freeman, praised his squad’s effort after the 3‑2 loss, noting that the team’s resilience was evident despite the narrow defeat.
With the tournament now heading into an elimination round, Hamilton will meet the loser of another match, while Cherry Hill prepares to face the winner of that same contest in the next stage.
