A Legendary Player Takes the Helm
Jack Johnson, a 19‑year veteran of the National Hockey League, has accepted an associate head coaching position with Ohio State’s women’s ice hockey program, bringing a wealth of professional experience to the collegiate ranks.
During his NHL tenure, Johnson logged 149 regular‑season games with the Pittsburgh Penguins after being selected third overall in the 2005 draft, and he also contributed stints with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Los Angeles Kings, Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers.
The Penguins bought out the final three years of his contract in October 2020, a move that opened the door for his transition into coaching.
Head coach Nadine Muzerall highlighted Johnson’s potential impact, noting that his championship pedigree and extensive network will strengthen recruiting efforts and reinforce the family‑oriented culture that defines Ohio State hockey.
In his own words, Johnson expressed honor at joining what he described as the premier women’s college hockey program in the country, underscoring his commitment to develop both athletes and the sport.
A New Chapter for Buckeye Hockey
The addition of a figure whose career spans three continents and multiple high‑pressure environments signals a strategic push by Ohio State to elevate its women’s program on the national stage, blending on‑ice expertise with off‑ice mentorship.
