A 41‑year‑old man from Phoenix was taken into custody this week after federal investigators determined that he possessed disturbing images of child abuse.
Matthew Hays, who served as a youth soccer referee for the U.S. Soccer Federation and volunteered with Junior Achievement of Arizona, was arrested on July 19 after returning from out‑of‑state travel.
A Dark Discovery
A search of Hays’s home and phone, authorized by a warrant, uncovered a flash drive containing graphic abuse material. Court documents indicate that the files depicted infants being victimized.
Investigators say Hays had acquired the material using cryptocurrency, a method that attracted the attention of Robinhood Markets, which reported the transactions to Homeland Security and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect now faces ten counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, with prosecutors warning that additional charges could follow as forensic analysis of his devices remains incomplete.
