A New Chapter for Chicago
Connor Bedard’s latest contract extension makes him one of the highest‑paid young centers in the league, but the deal comes with a significant caveat: a left shoulder injury that will sideline him for the opening stretch of the 2026‑27 season.
The Blackhawks announced on July 8 that Bedard underwent surgery and will be out for approximately four months, a timeline that pushes his return into early winter. Despite the setback, the center said he is “happy with the contract” and remains fully committed to the organization.
Bedard’s five‑year, $75 million agreement carries a $15 million average annual value, which is $3 million less than the cap hit Leo Carlsson received from the Anaheim Ducks after his offer sheet. The center emphasized that Carlsson’s deal did not influence his negotiations with Chicago.
When asked about the team’s direction, Bedard praised the Blackhawks’ young core and the tight‑knit culture that has developed over the past few seasons. “We have a lot of talent coming up, and we’re excited to take the next step together,” he said.
The offseason has been busy for Chicago. In addition to Bedard’s re‑signing, the club added Bowen Byram, Jordan Greenway, Cole Smith and veteran defenseman Ian Cole. Bedard described Byram as “one of the best defensemen in the league” and noted Greenway’s physical presence will complement the roster.
Bedard also joked about Ian Cole’s occasional cross‑checks, underscoring the light‑hearted chemistry that already exists in the locker room. He expressed particular enthusiasm about the possibility of Patrick Kane returning, saying the veteran’s presence would “make the team better and bring excitement to the fans.”
The ultimate goal, according to Bedard, is to transform the Blackhawks into a playoff contender. “Our aim is to become a playoff team and take a big step forward next season,” he affirmed, signaling that the organization’s long‑term plan is already taking shape.
