Johnson's career spanned 19 professional seasons, during which he appeared in 1,228 NHL games for a variety of franchises. Internationally, he represented the United States at five senior men's tournaments between 2007 and 2012, and he also earned caps with the U.S. Under‑18 team in 2004 and 2005. In college, he honed his skills at the University of Michigan before turning pro.
