A Versatile Defensive Asset
Dashawn Spears, a safety for LSU, has emerged as one of the most promising defensive backs in the SEC over the past two seasons.
His breakout moment came in 2025 when he intercepted two passes against Florida, a performance that earned him SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors and highlighted his knack for reading quarterbacks.
Coupled with 53 tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack accumulated across 26 career games, Spears combines physicality with coverage skill, making him a versatile piece in coordinator Blake Baker’s scheme.
Looking ahead to the 2026 campaign, Spears is slated to start every game and will be tasked with a hybrid role that includes deep coverage, run support and occasional blitzing, a prospect that excites both coaches and analysts.
Adding to the depth of the secondary, LSU recruited Boise State transfer Ty Benefield, whose skill set mirrors Spears’ versatility. The pairing could give the Tigers one of the most formidable safety duos in the nation.
Defensive coordinator Blake Baker, now in his third year at LSU, has praised Spears’ football IQ and adaptability, noting that the player’s continued development could transform the program’s defensive identity.
