Alex Gettens has been named the eighth head coach of the University of Maine women's ice hockey program, taking the reins of a program with a rich history and high aspirations.
The announcement follows a decade of diverse coaching experience, including two seasons as an assistant at Colgate University and a recent promotion to associate head coach at the University of Vermont.
A new chapter for Maine women's ice hockey
At Colgate, Gettens helped the Raiders secure an at‑large berth in the 2025 NCAA Tournament and mentored five All‑ECAC selections, while also coaching six PWHL draft picks, notably the 2025 first‑overall selection Kristyna Kaltounkova.
His work in Vermont produced the program’s first two All‑Americans and saw Theresa Schafzahl become the first Catamount to earn Hockey East Player of the Year honors.
During a five‑game stint as acting head coach, Gettens guided the Catamounts to a perfect 5‑0 record, underscoring his ability to lead under pressure.
Gettens previously served a season in Orono in 2017‑18, assisting the goaltenders and contributing to a historic 19‑win campaign that remains the most successful season in program history.
An introductory press conference will be held on Tuesday, July 28 at 2 p.m. in the film room of the Shawn Walsh Hockey Center at Alfond Arena, giving fans their first chance to hear his vision.
Before entering the college ranks, Gettens began his coaching journey in 2011 with the St. Paul’s School girls’ ice hockey team, a program that captured a New England Prep School Championship in 2015.
He earned a bachelor of science degree in community entrepreneurship from the University of Vermont in 2017, a foundation that informs his holistic approach to player development.
