The St. Louis Blues announced this week that former NHL defenseman Sergei Zubov has been appointed as an advisor to the franchise’s hockey operations department, a move that signals the team’s intent to blend veteran insight with modern analytics.
A Hall of Fame Legacy
Zubov, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019, previously served as a consultant for the Blues during the 2012‑13 season, bringing a wealth of international experience and a deep understanding of the game’s evolving dynamics.
Since retiring as a player in 2010, Zubov has built a diverse coaching résumé, having guided KHL clubs such as SKA Saint Petersburg, HK Sochi and Dinamo Riga, and most recently overseeing the Russian U‑20 national team in 2021‑22.
Alex Steen, the Blues’ general manager, praised the new hire, noting that Sergei’s extensive playing résumé and his proven leadership in both European and North American settings give the club a unique edge as it continues to evolve its hockey strategy.
From KHL to Dallas Stars
Zubov’s playing career spanned 1,068 NHL games with the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas Stars, during which he captured two Stanley Cups — 1994 with the Rangers and 1999 with the Stars.
