A coalition of eight collegiate conferences has come together to raise the standard of officiating in women’s basketball, creating a unified framework that promises clearer guidance, better development and a more consistent game experience for players and fans alike.
A Unified Vision for Officiating
The alliance, anchored by the Atlantic Coast Conference, also welcomes the Big East, the American Athletic Conference, the Atlantic 10, the Colonial Athletic Association, the Big South and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference under a single umbrella.
At the helm of this effort is Pualani Spurlock‑Welsh, a veteran referee whose 18‑year stint at the Division I level includes 14 years of service within the ACC and a résumé that spans four Final Fours, WNBA assignments and NBA G‑League games.
Leadership and Legacy
Spurlock‑Welsh’s journey began on the courts of Duquesne, continued as a graduate assistant at Slippery Rock and evolved into a distinguished career that has seen her manage over 75 games each season since 2011 across multiple conferences.
Her mandate for the new partnership is threefold: recruit promising officials, provide them with rigorous training and retain them through clear pathways that move from smaller venues to the national stage.
By mapping a structured progression through the member conferences, the alliance hopes to ensure that every level of women’s college basketball is governed by officials who not only understand the rules but also embody the league’s evolving standards of excellence.
