A community’s show of solidarity
Tom Smith, a longtime coach from Park Ridge, New Jersey, is preparing for a stem cell transplant as he battles multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer that has reshaped his daily life.
In response, the local hockey community staged a charity tournament called "Skate for Tommy" at the Inline Skating Club of America, drawing more than 100 players who formed twelve teams and welcomed roughly four hundred supporters.
Denis Jelcic, owner of the Inline Skating Club of America, spearheaded the event, which also featured an ice‑cream fundraiser at Uncle Louie G’s, a GoFundMe campaign launched by Smith’s sister Lori, and a steady stream of donations from nearby businesses and volunteers.
Players wore custom jerseys bearing Smith’s No. 16 and a captain’s "C," a tribute to his leadership of Bergenfield’s 2007 national championship roller‑hockey team, while his daughter Molly sang the national anthem before the opening face‑off.
The Bruins, a squad composed of the children of players Smith once coached, captured the tournament championship, sealing a day of competition, camaraderie, and celebration.
Smith’s wife Kristine reflected on the outpouring of support, calling it a day they would never forget, and the coach described the experience as humbling and inspiring, noting the strength he drew from teammates, opponents, former players, their families and even strangers.
