Jack Johnson, the retired NHL defenseman who captured the Stanley Cup in 2022, is set to embark on a new chapter in college hockey. After 19 seasons that took him through eight professional franchises, the veteran blue‑liner now turns his focus to shaping the next generation of women's talent at Ohio State.
Head Coach Nadine Muzerall announced the appointment, emphasizing that Johnson's deep‑rooted experience and proven leadership will be instrumental as the program seeks to maintain its status as the premier women's college hockey environment in the country. Johnson's professional résumé reads like a who's‑who of the NHL. He logged stints with the Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets and the Buffalo Sabres, accumulating a wealth of high‑pressure playoff experience. Internationally, he earned caps on five U.S. Men’s National Teams between 2007 and 2012 and contributed to two U‑18 squads in 2004 and 2005.
A University of Michigan alumnus, Johnson brings a collegiate foundation to his new role. He has spoken openly about the honor of joining the Buckeyes, citing the program's tradition and its pursuit of national championships as key draws.
