"I had to look beyond my sphere of influence," Schiano said, explaining that the experience taught him how other programs operate and how those insights can be applied to Rutgers.
Retention of top talent proved another focal point. Thanks to a more favorable financial landscape, Rutgers managed to keep its three primary retention targets — KJ Duff, Antwan Raymond, and Kwabena Asamoah — on the roster. Schiano praised the new defensive coordinator, Travis Johansen, for his commitment, while also acknowledging the personal considerations that shaped the hiring decision.
The interview touched on the appointment of Keli Zinn and the broader realignment at the university, with Schiano expressing confidence that President Tate fully grasps the competitive demands of the league. He added that the new leadership team is already delivering tangible benefits for the program.
