Kim Davis, the NHL’s Senior Executive Vice President of Social Impact, Growth Initiatives and Legislative Affairs, stepped onto the stage at the 14th annual Baltimore Street Hockey Tournament to underscore the growing partnership between professional hockey and the Girl Scouts.
She moderated a panel that featured Olympic gold‑medalist Megan Keller, Paralympic legend Tatyana McFadden, Dancing with the Stars champion Witney Carson and swimmer Mariel Hawley, each sharing how athletic competition and scouting have shaped their confidence and leadership skills.
The conversation resonated with the teenage audience, especially when Randi Marley‑Jones, a 16‑year‑old Girl Scout from Maryland, described the moment she met Keller and felt a newfound belief in the possibilities of women’s sports.
McKenna Hendricks, a 13‑year‑old from Madison, Wisconsin, and Avalon Norton, also 13 and from Easton, Pennsylvania, expressed how the hands‑on hockey sessions let them experience the thrill of the game while forging new friendships across state lines.
The tournament itself drew more than 120 boys and girls from twelve community centers, with Davis performing a ceremonial face‑off that opened a day of fast‑paced games and friendly competition.
Beyond the rink, participants took part in a learn‑to‑skate session led by the Howard University figure skating team and attended an NHL STREET skills clinic that blended skill development with discussions about careers in hockey.
Organizers highlighted the event’s broader mission: to use sports as a catalyst for empowerment, encouraging young women to see leadership not only on the field but also in their communities and future workplaces.
