The Alabama High School Athletic Association has handed down a series of penalties to Mary G. Montgomery High School after discovering irregularities in its football program’s recruiting practices.
Sanctions Imposed
Head coach Zach Golson, who guided the Vikings to a 10‑2 record in 2025 and a state semifinal appearance the previous year, will miss the entire 2026‑27 season. The school itself is barred from postseason competition, and any wins accumulated during the upcoming ten‑game schedule will not be counted toward regional standings or tiebreakers.
The sanctions also include a financial fine and a multi‑year restriction on scholarship allocations, marking one of the most severe disciplinary actions taken against a high school program in recent memory.
Golson, now in his fourth year as head coach, departs with a cumulative record of 37‑10, having captured two regional championships and led the team to the 2023 state semifinals. His tenure coincided with a surge in participation and community support.
Among the players set to return is top running back Kamron Smith, who amassed 1,137 yards and 13 touchdowns in his junior season, giving the Vikings a potent offensive weapon for the upcoming campaign.
On social media, Golson acknowledged the ruling, expressing disappointment while emphasizing his commitment to rebuilding the program within the bounds of the rules.
Looking Ahead
The coming season will test whether the Vikings can maintain momentum despite the loss of their coach and the specter of postseason ineligibility. Observers will watch closely to see how the team adapts and whether the sanctions serve as a deterrent to future infractions across the state.
