The Virginia Cavaliers are gearing up for another ambitious campaign, and head coach Ryan Odom has repeatedly stressed the value of role players who can add depth and versatility to the roster.
A New Dimension for the Cavaliers
Elijah Gertrude, a sophomore guard, is expected to be a key role player for Virginia Cavaliers next season. In his freshman year he averaged 1.7 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game, numbers that may seem modest but reflect a player who thrives in subtle, defensive contributions and off‑ball movement.
Silas Barksdale, a 6‑foot‑9, 223‑pound forward, redshirted as a freshman and now looks ready to contribute as a big man. His combination of size, shooting range and rebounding instincts gives the Cavaliers an additional option in the paint, complementing the existing frontcourt.
Alongside Gertrude and Barksdale, returning standouts Thijs De Ridder and Johann Grünloh are poised to anchor the team’s chemistry, while Odom’s strategic adjustments aim to sustain the momentum that helped the program win 30 games last season.
