A strategic hire for Hokies baseball
Virginia Tech announced this week that Rich Witten will take the reins as General Manager and Director of Baseball Operations, a move that underscores the program’s ambition to emulate the operational rigor of Major League Baseball front offices.
Witten arrives with a résumé that spans four seasons as skipper at Florida International, a stint as hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Virginia Commonwealth University, and a brief but intensive period as director of baseball operations at the University of Central Florida. His administrative chops were further honed during a year at Winthrop University, where he served as assistant coach before stepping into the dual‑role at Virginia Tech.
A trend toward MLB‑style infrastructure
The hiring reflects a broader shift across college baseball, where programs are increasingly staffing dedicated front‑office positions to streamline roster construction, scouting logistics and player development. By adopting a structure reminiscent of professional clubs, Virginia Tech hopes to translate its 2026 NCAA regional breakthrough into sustained postseason contention.
John Szefc, who held the GM/Director of Baseball Operations title for a brief stint, will transition out of the role, making way for Witten’s more expansive skill set. The change comes as the Hokies look to capitalize on the momentum generated by their recent regional appearance and to solidify a pipeline that blends analytics with traditional scouting.
The appointment also brings a familiar face back into the fold: Easton Dally, who previously served as an assistant coach, is expected to continue contributing to the team’s player development efforts. Together, the new leadership aims to tighten the connection between the clubhouse and the administrative side of the program.
