Brandon Roy, the former NBA All‑Star and three‑time state champion coach, has been reinstated as the head coach of Garfield High School’s boys basketball program, the school announced this week.
His return follows a thorough investigation by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, which cleared him of illegal tampering allegations, and a comprehensive interview process that the school described as rigorous.
A New Chapter for Garfield Basketball
Roy’s previous stint at Garfield produced three Class 3A state championships and forged a deep connection with the community. Before coaching, he starred at the University of Washington, where he was an All‑American and Pac‑10 Player of the Year in 2006.
Drafted sixth overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2006, Roy captured the NBA Rookie of the Year award and earned three All‑Star selections before knee injuries curtailed his professional career. He later coached Nathan Hale High School to a perfect 29‑0 season, earning the Naismith National High School Coach of the Year honor.
