From Coma to Campus Graduation: Jonny Landis Finds New Purpose with Dawg Nation Hockey

A Colorado survivor turns trauma into a mission to help others through hockey and medical equipment advocacy

When Jonny Landis first laced up his skates after a devastating fall, the rink became more than a place to play — it turned into a sanctuary for healing.

A Near‑Fatal Fall

In the spring of 2019, during his freshman year at the University of Colorado, Landis tumbled 42 feet off a balcony. The impact left him with more than 160 skull fractures and required a 60‑day coma.

The aftermath kept him in the hospital for months, where intensive rehabilitation helped him regain strength, speech and the ability to walk again.

Walking Across the Stage

Seven years after the accident, Landis returned to campus to receive his diploma, a moment that underscored the resilience he had cultivated during his long recovery.

Now interning with Dawg Nation Hockey’s Hockey Heals program, he works alongside a community that uses the sport as a catalyst for personal transformation.

A Mission Beyond the Rink

Landis hopes to leverage his experience to sell the medical devices that were instrumental in his survival, aiming to make them more accessible to others facing similar life‑altering injuries.

His story illustrates how a single individual can turn personal tragedy into a broader mission, using sport, education and advocacy to foster recovery for others.
