Eurobasket Showcase
Nikola Djepina’s name resonated throughout the recent FIBA U20 Eurobasket tournament as the Serbian power forward helped his nation reach the championship game, only to see the title slip away in Ljubljana against a disciplined Slovenian side.
Over seven contests he posted averages of 13.8 points and 6.5 rebounds, a production that earned him a place on the all‑tournament team and underscored his versatility beyond the three‑point line.
His most striking performance came against Poland, where he posted a 21‑point, 13‑rebound double‑double, a showing that left observers convinced he could shoulder more responsibility.
Though Serbia fell short of the podium, Djepina was visibly upset when the final buzzer sounded, a reaction that highlighted both his competitive fire and his desire to translate this experience into a larger role back home.
Now a sophomore at the University of Washington, he returns to the Huskies program that is in the midst of a rebuild. The team is navigating a crowded frontcourt, with forwards such as Danny Sprinkle, LeJuan Watts, Steele Venters, Lathan Somerville, Boris Tisma and Lattimore Ford all vying for starting minutes.
Coach Danny Sprinkle has spoken openly about the need for added strength and maturity, especially as the Huskies prepare to compete in the demanding Big Ten conference. Djepina’s offseason work focuses on building a more physical presence while retaining the shooting touch that already stretches defenses.
The upcoming season will be a litmus test for the Serbian forward, who aims to prove he is more than a perimeter shooter and can handle the rigors of high‑level collegiate play.
