A New Chapter for Vanderbilt Basketball
Gabe Nesmith, a five-star basketball recruit, has elected to reclassify and join Vanderbilt University a year early for the 2026-27 season, a move that places him among the most highly touted prospects the Commodores have secured since 2018. His cousin, former Vanderbilt star Aaron Nesmith, has long been a symbol of the program’s pedigree, and Gabe says the chance to follow a similar path influenced his decision.
Nesmith will arrive in Nashville alongside a talented mix of newcomers and experienced players. The roster already features returning star guard Tyler Tanner, who opted to test the NBA Draft process before deciding to stay, as well as a group of transfers that includes Ace Glass, Bangot Dak, Sebastian Williams-Adams, TO Barrett and Berke Buyuktuncel. Together with several freshmen, the Commodores hope to build on recent momentum.
During the summer on the EYBL circuit, Nesmith posted averages of 18.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game, underscoring his all-around skill set. He has spoken openly about his desire to help Vanderbilt capture both the SEC title and a national championship, a goal that aligns with the program’s recent investments in talent and facilities.
The coaching staff has emphasized a culture of depth and versatility, noting that the influx of experienced transfers and high-ranked freshmen creates a competitive environment in practice. This environment, Nesmith says, will accelerate his development and prepare the team for the rigors of conference play.
Vanderbilt’s athletic department, anchored by Vanderbilt University, views the commitment as a milestone in rebuilding the program’s national profile.
