When fans watch a baseball game, the action on the field is only part of the story. Behind every swing, pitch and sprint lies a cascade of data points collected by Statcast, Major League Baseball’s high‑speed radar system. Since its rollout, the technology has turned raw motion into a language that analysts, coaches and even players use to fine‑tune performance.
One of the most talked‑about concepts is the definition of a hard‑hit ball. Statcast tags any batted ball that leaves the bat at 95 mph or faster as a hard hit, a threshold that correlates strongly with extra‑base hits and power production. This simple metric has become a shorthand for evaluating a hitter’s raw strength.
Hard‑Hit Balls and Expected Outcomes
But the system goes further than a binary label. Every contact is recorded as a batted‑ball event, and from that event Statcast derives expected metrics such as xBA, the probability that a given ball will become a hit based on its characteristics. By comparing a player’s actual batting average to his xBA, teams can gauge whether a slump is likely to persist or if a breakout is imminent.
Another cornerstone is xwOBA, which blends exit velocity, launch angle and sprint speed to estimate the expected value of a ball in play. The resulting figure is then translated into xERA, a 1:1 conversion that places the metric on the familiar ERA scale. This allows pitchers to be judged not just by outcomes but by the quality of the balls they allow.
Swing Speed and Attack Angle
Hitters also track EV50, the average exit velocity of their hardest half of batted balls, and bat speed, measured at the sweet spot of the bat. A swing that exceeds 75 mph in bat speed is considered fast, and an optimal attack angle of 5‑20 degrees is associated with the most efficient launch trajectories.
Understanding these numbers helps explain why some hitters consistently drive the ball into the gaps while others struggle to get the ball off the ground.
Spin, Reaction and Sprint
Spin is another invisible factor. Statcast distinguishes between active spin, which contributes to movement, and total spin, which includes components that do not affect the ball’s path. Understanding spin helps explain why a fastball can rise or a curveball breaks sharply.
On the defensive side, the Jump metric highlights outfielders with the quickest reactions and most direct routes, while a Bolt denotes any baserunner whose sprint speed reaches at least 30 ft/sec. Both measures illustrate how speed and agility are quantified in modern scouting.
