Historic Roots of Iowa’s Summer Baseball Tournament
For nearly a century the Iowa High School Athletic Association has presided over a baseball championship that stands apart from the rest of the nation. While most states conclude their high school baseball seasons in the spring, Iowa uniquely schedules its state tournament during the summer, giving players a chance to showcase their talents under warm sun and allowing the community to gather for a true midsummer celebration.
The 2026 edition will once again bring together 32 teams spread across four classifications, each vying for a coveted state title. Competition is set to unfold from July 20 through July 24, with the schedule carefully arranged to feature Class 4A and Class 3A matchups at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, while Class 2A and Class 1A games will take place at Merchants Park in Carroll.
A Digital Broadcast for a New Generation
Every quarterfinal contest will be streamed live on the NFHS Network, giving fans across the state and beyond the opportunity to follow the action in real time. This digital outreach not only expands the tournament’s reach but also highlights the growing integration of high school sports with online platforms, ensuring that even those unable to travel to the venues can experience the excitement from home.
The tournament’s structure places the most competitive classifications at the historic Veterans Memorial Stadium, a venue known for its lively atmosphere and central location in the state’s sports scene. Meanwhile, the smaller fields at Merchants Park provide an intimate setting for the lower classifications, allowing emerging talent to shine on a stage that has nurtured generations of Iowa baseball stars.
Recent champions illustrate the depth of competition in each class. In 2025, Iowa City, City High captured the Class 4A crown, while Pella dominated Class 3A, Pleasantville took the Class 2A title, and Saint Ansgar emerged victorious in Class 1A. These titles not only reflect the skill of the teams but also underscore the tradition of excellence that defines Iowa’s summer baseball championship.
