A Rookie’s Perspective on Pay
He disclosed that his first‑year salary with the Chicago Bulls was exactly $4,822,800, a figure that barely registered in his mind at the time.
Drafted first overall in 2008, Rose quickly became the face of the Bulls, averaging 16.8 points, 6.3 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game en route to a Rookie of the Year award.
Reflecting on his mindset, Rose said he was driven by a pure love for the game and remained detached from the business side of basketball during his early years.
The realization of the magnitude of his earnings struck during his sophomore season, and later contracts, including a five‑year, $94.3 million extension in December 2011, pushed his career total to roughly $168 million in NBA salary.
"Money was the last thing on my mind," Rose explained, emphasizing that his focus stayed on the sport rather than the paycheck.
