Defensively, the squad posted a respectable third‑place finish in the SEC in total defense, allowing just 250.2 yards per game, while forcing 2.2 turnovers per game. Among the standout defenders was cornerback Teako Brown, who recorded three interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown against Southwestern Louisiana and another in the Sugar Bowl.
