A Familiar Rival Returns
Nebraska's women's basketball program will begin the 2026‑27 campaign with an exhibition contest against Wayne State College, scheduled for late October 2026. The game, set for Friday, October 23, will serve as the first public appearance for the Huskers under their new coaching staff and will be played on the home court of the Cornhuskers.
The last time these two squads met was in November 2014, when Nebraska rolled past Wayne State 84‑43 in front of a record crowd of 4,948 fans. That victory remains the most recent chapter in a series that dates back to 1975, underscoring a long‑standing regional rivalry.
Wayne State enters the exhibition with a 10‑18 record from the previous season, a performance overseen by head coach Brian Ortmeier in his second year at the helm. Ortmeier previously guided Briar Cliff University to an NAIA semifinal appearance during the 2024‑25 campaign, bringing a reputation for disciplined, up‑tempo play.
While the start time for the October 23 matchup has yet to be announced, the exhibition is expected to draw a sizable audience eager to see the Huskers' fresh roster in action. The game will also provide both programs with a chance to fine‑tune strategies ahead of their respective regular seasons.
