Tadahito Iguchi, celebrated for his analytical mindset and experience both in Japan and the United States, has been named the new manager of Japan’s national baseball team, Samurai Japan. The appointment marks the first time a former major leaguer will guide the squad, underscoring a strategic shift toward a more global outlook.
Iguchi’s career spans eight seasons with the Daiei Hawks, four years in Major League Baseball with the White Sox, Phillies and Padres, and a five‑year managerial stint with the Lotte Marines. Known for pioneering data‑driven player placement, he previously led the Marines to two second‑place finishes and helped develop star pitcher Roki Sasaki.
As manager, Iguchi will oversee roster construction and negotiate directly with MLB clubs, a role that blends general‑manager responsibilities with on‑field strategy. Iguchi’s ultimate goal is to guide Samurai Japan to a second consecutive Olympic title at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. He notes that the 2028 Olympics could feature active major leaguers for the first time, and players like Shohei Ohtani have expressed a strong desire to compete, adding excitement to the upcoming cycle.
The upcoming Premier12 tournament will serve as a crucial qualifier, with the top Asian finisher earning an Olympic berth. Iguchi plans to debut his leadership at the Asia Professional Baseball Championship in November, using that platform to test new combinations before the next World Baseball Classic and the 2026 WBC.
