The Big South Nationals basketball tournament kicked off this weekend in Bay County, Florida, drawing 87 teams and more than 200 games across several school gyms.
Southern Elite Sports and Panhandle Basketball, the event’s organizers, have turned the fifth‑annual tournament into the largest youth basketball showcase in the region, offering competition for boys and girls from third through twelfth grade.
“Our goal is to deliver a top‑tier experience for players, families and fans,” said Brent Dillard, owner of Southern Elite Sports, emphasizing the tournament’s commitment to quality and fair play.
Eight local squads, including the Gulf Coast Warriors, are among the competitors, with head coach Jamie Pinkett noting that summer leagues keep children active, engaged and on a positive trajectory.
Bracket play is already underway, and Sunday’s schedule promises additional matchups at venues such as Rutherford High School, giving teams a chance to fine‑tune their strategies before the finals.
Community Impact
The surge in summer sports participation reflects a broader community effort to provide structured, competitive outlets for youth, reinforcing both athletic development and personal growth.
As the tournament moves toward its championship rounds, organizers hope the momentum will inspire future generations to stay involved in sport and community life.
