Ivy League Tournament Recap
The Ivy League baseball tournament arrived with high expectations for the Penn Quakers, who entered as the No. 2 seed after a 14‑5 conference run. Their opponents, Brown and Columbia, were the No. 3 seeds, each carrying a respectable but slightly less dominant record.
In the first matchup, Penn struck first, plating a run in the opening inning to take a 1‑0 edge over Brown. The lead held for several frames, but a late surge by the Bears turned the tide, and Penn fell 7‑4 after a ninth‑inning collapse that left the crowd stunned.
Coach John Yurkow, who has guided the seniors through four straight Ivy League tournaments, praised the graduating class for their resilience and character, noting that players such as Gavin Degnan, Nick Newburn and Marty Coyne had anchored the squad both on the mound and at the plate.
Among the seniors, Jay Secretarski, Jarrett Pokrovsky, Matt Luigs, Mika Peterson, Alex Benevento, Mark Henshon, Nick Spaventa, Owen Estabrook, Jackson Brewer, Nick O’Brien and Ben Moulins, all contributed to the team's depth and spirit.
The following day the Quakers faced Columbia, only to see the Lions explode for five runs in the first two innings. Despite a brief tie at 2‑2 in the second inning, Penn could not recover and ultimately lost 6‑3, sealing a double‑elimination exit.
The season closed with the seniors reflecting on a journey that included four consecutive tournament appearances. Their departure marks the end of an era, but the foundation they built promises a bright future for the program.
