Eau Claire Landmarks Commission Clears Historic Grandstand Upgrades at Carson Park

Structural repairs, waterproofing and drainage improvements set to begin in mid‑August after state approval

Historic Grandstand Revitalization Approved

The Eau Claire Landmarks Commission granted a Certificate of Appropriateness for a comprehensive upgrade of the historic grandstands at Carson Park, a baseball venue listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The project is designed to halt chronic water infiltration that has plagued the seating structure for years. Planned measures include repairing and replacing deteriorated steel elements, installing waterproof and vapor‑permeable coatings beneath the seats and on walkway surfaces, and enhancing surface drainage.

Work is scheduled to commence in mid‑August, beginning with the first phase of baseline improvements that will address structural steel repairs and apply protective coatings.

In addition to waterproofing, the scope calls for deferred protective painting and improvements to the stadium’s drainage system, all while preserving the venue’s historic character.

Patrick Newkirk, Recreation and Facilities Manager for the City of Eau Claire, expressed enthusiasm for the commission’s decision, noting that the upgrades will safeguard the stadium for future fans and athletes.

State Review Pending

The commission also voted to recommend all four phases of the project to the state for final approval, a requirement triggered by the site’s historic designation.

City officials highlighted that the coordinated effort involves multiple municipal departments and aims to balance preservation with modern functionality, ensuring the landmark remains safe and enjoyable for generations to come.
