Wild Ink Multi-Year Deal with Jacksonville Icemen
The Minnesota Wild announced a multi-year affiliation agreement with the Jacksonville Icemen of the ECHL, a partnership set to begin in the 2026-27 season.
The deal is intended to deepen player development, offering prospects a dedicated environment to compete at a high level while complementing their AHL assignments with the Iowa Wild.
Joe Ernst, the Wild’s director of player development, said the arrangement expands the organization’s reach and provides additional pathways for emerging talent.
A Brief Look at the Icemen’s History and Home
The Jacksonville Icemen entered the ECHL for the 2017-18 season and have since risen to prominence, leading the league in sellouts for four consecutive years.
They host their games at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, a 15,000-seat facility that opened in November 2003 and serves as a focal point for hockey in Jacksonville.
The franchise is owned by Zawyer Sports, a sports-entertainment company that has invested heavily in the team’s operations and fan experience.
Under the new agreement, Wild prospects can be assigned to Jacksonville for developmental purposes throughout the season, giving them regular game action in a professional setting.
Strategic Implications for the Wild
Bill Guerin, the Wild’s general manager, emphasized that the partnership strengthens the organization’s ability to nurture talent and broaden its developmental footprint across the United States.
The move reflects a growing trend among NHL teams to leverage ECHL affiliations as a bridge between the AHL and lower-level competition, ensuring a steady flow of ready-to-play talent.
