The clinic is part of a program that started as a modest pilot in 2018 at 19 high schools in Gwinnett County. Since then, the initiative has grown exponentially, now encompassing more than 300 schools statewide that officially recognize girls flag football as a varsity sport. The Falcons' effort has positioned Georgia as one of the leading states driving the expansion of the sport.
More Than Drills
Head coach Hayley Pickle, who has been a vocal advocate for the program, emphasized that the clinic offers more than just athletic instruction. "It carries weight beyond the drills," she said, highlighting the personal development and leadership skills that participants gain. Players such as Alani Flemming-Byers and Karleigh Howze have spoken about the boost in confidence and technique they experienced during the session.
Looking Ahead
The momentum shows no signs of slowing. The NFL has announced plans to launch both men's and women's flag leagues in 2027, a move that could further cement flag football's place in the national sports landscape. In Georgia, the GHSA girls flag football season is slated to begin on September 7, with the state championships set to return to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in December, offering teams a high‑profile stage to showcase their growth.
