Zion Tupuola-Fetui has stepped onto the sidelines at the University of Idaho, taking on the role of assistant defensive-line coach as the Vandals gear up for fall camp. The move marks a full-circle moment for a player who once terrorized opposing quarterbacks in the Pac-12.
During his collegiate career at Washington, Tupuola-Fetui earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors and was recognized as a third-team Associated Press All-American in 2020. He finished his college tenure with 16 sacks, a testament to his pass-rushing prowess, before a torn Achilles tendon in 2021 curtailed his playing ambitions.
After completing rehabilitation, he briefly tested the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, an experience that broadened his tactical perspective. Now, back in the United States, he is focused on shaping a defensive unit that aims to be more aggressive and cohesive.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer, who returned to the Pacific Northwest after a stint at Washington, has praised Tupuola-Fetui’s leadership and distinctive personality, noting that his presence adds a layer of intensity that the team has been missing. The Vandals open their season at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on August 28, a game that will serve as a litmus test for the new defensive schemes.
