Coldwater High School names new girls basketball head coach

Malorie Rzepka takes the helm after Ken Smoker's retirement while Union City appoints Josh Vick

A new era for Coldwater basketball

Malorie Rzepka has been hired as the head coach of the Coldwater High School varsity girls basketball team, taking over from Ken Smoker, who recently retired after a distinguished tenure. Rzepka, a Coldwater High School Athletic Hall of Famer, brings a deep playing pedigree and a commitment to developing young talent.

A 2019 graduate of Coldwater, she earned 14 varsity letters across basketball, soccer, volleyball and track before playing at Alma College. After a year coaching the freshman girls basketball team at her alma mater, Rzepka served as an assistant with the Kalamazoo College women’s basketball program, gaining valuable experience that the board believes will translate into success at the varsity level.

Union City taps seasoned coach

Josh Vick has been appointed as the eighth‑grade language arts teacher and varsity girls basketball head coach at Union City, succeeding Tina Scheidler. Vick’s coaching journey spans eleven years within the Climax‑Scotts program, where he progressed from JV coach and varsity assistant (2008‑2013) to head coach (2013‑2019). Most recently, he served as associate head coach for Glen Oaks Community College’s women’s basketball team from 2022 to 2024.

The Union City Board of Education highlighted Vick’s proven ability to build competitive programs and his deep roots in the region. His appointment is expected to bring continuity and a fresh strategic direction to the Chargers as they look ahead to the upcoming season.
