Alex Brown has officially stepped into the role of head coach for the Pacific University women's basketball program, bringing a blend of playing experience and coaching acumen that stretches from the collegiate ranks to the professional arena.
Brown's journey began as a practice player under Kelly Graves at Gonzaga University, followed by stints teaching English in Costa Rica and South Korea before he transitioned to coaching. His early volunteer work at the University of Portland and two seasons as an assistant at Warner Pacific honed his ability to connect with players and build developmental pathways.
At George Fox, Brown contributed to back‑to‑back Northwest Conference championship game appearances and helped the team post a 21‑11 record in conference play during his final two seasons. Pacific Director of Athletics Keith Buckley praised Brown's passion for the women's game and his strong recruiting network across the region.
Brown's philosophy centers on establishing a strong culture rooted in trust, relationship‑building, and daily competition. He believes that embracing competition as a skill translates into tangible results on the court, and he is committed to a player‑development model that prioritizes growth over immediate outcomes.
Looking ahead, Brown plans to implement a more free‑flowing offense that encourages players to read the game rather than memorize set plays. This approach, shaped by his work as a player development logger for the WNBA's Portland Fire, aims to give athletes the freedom to make instinctive decisions while still adhering to a cohesive team identity.
