Why the Draft Rule Is Holding the League Back
The draft‑only model was tolerable when the league comprised only a handful of clubs, but as the organization prepares to welcome twelve franchises the system begins to look increasingly restrictive.
Veteran athletes who have already built international reputations find themselves forced to re‑enter a draft that prioritises youth and collegiate eligibility over proven skill.
In contrast, the National Hockey League permits players to become unrestricted free agents after reaching a certain age, giving them the freedom to sign wherever they choose.
The PWHL could adopt a hybrid approach, allowing athletes who have completed their collegiate careers in the NCAA or U SPORTS to join the league immediately, while still preserving a structured entry point for emerging talent.
Opening the Door to Global Talent
European players currently face a deadline: they must declare for the draft before turning twenty‑five or risk losing eligibility, a rule that has discouraged many from pursuing North American contracts.
Relaxing that threshold would invite a broader spectrum of skill, raising the overall competitiveness of the league and providing a boost to European federations that are eager to develop their own pipelines.
