A Season of Promise
When the 2001 season opened, expectations were high for the Lake Catholic Cougars. After two consecutive first‑round playoff exits, head coach Tom Lombardo, in his third year at the helm, believed the senior‑laden squad could finally break through. The team opened with two shutout victories, but a loss to Benedictine exposed the perils of overconfidence.
The September 11 attacks briefly halted the schedule, but the Cougars returned to action with renewed focus. Wins over North and a narrow defeat to undefeated Chanel tested their resolve, while sophomore quarterback Mark Petruziello quickly proved his mettle, guiding the offense with poise beyond his years.
Playoffs and the Road to the Final
The postseason saw the Cougars dispatch Benedictine, Akron Hoban, Poland Seminary and Bellevue, each victory cementing their status as contenders. Key contributors such as Matt Matteucci, who set a state‑final record with nine catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and Mark Petruziello, who finished the championship game with a record 20 completions and 298 passing yards, emerged as leaders.
In the state final against Columbus DeSales, the game stretched into overtime. Petruziello’s arm delivered the decisive drive, and the Cougars edged out a 27‑21 victory. The win was not only a personal triumph for Petruziello, but also a collective achievement that highlighted the depth of the senior class.
A Community’s Celebration
When the team returned to Mentor, a police escort escorted them down Route 306, and former players, including Mike Gibbons and Kevin Bowers, joined the celebration. Coach Lombardo, now leading St. Edward, reflected on the legacy of John Gibbons, his predecessor, while Dan Cvelbar and other assistants continued to shape the program’s future at Madison Middle School.
The championship added another chapter to Lake Catholic’s storied football tradition, a narrative that still draws figures like Joe Jurevicius, Sean Saari and Mike Vidmar to current games. For many, the 2001 title remains a benchmark of what a united community can achieve.
