Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has voiced strong criticism of the current transfer portal landscape, saying that the absence of clear penalties has fostered a climate of rampant tampering.
His remarks follow a specific episode in which a recruit committed to Clemson, only to depart for Ole Miss after being approached by the Rebels’ defensive coordinator, a move that Swinney says flagrantly violates NCAA regulations.
Swinney contends that the sport must adopt either a stringent framework with defined punishments or a complete removal of all restrictions, arguing that the middle ground creates confusion and undermines fair competition.
He pointed to the proposed Protect the College Sports Act as a potential legislative solution, noting that the bill contemplates financial penalties and sanctions for institutions caught engaging in illicit recruiting activities, and that it could receive Senate approval in the coming weeks.
If enacted, the legislation could reshape how programs navigate player movement, compelling coaches and administrators to adhere to a more predictable set of rules that align with the broader mission of collegiate athletics.
