Statcast has become the backbone of modern baseball analysis, capturing every swing, pitch and defensive move with unprecedented precision. The system translates raw movement into numbers that help teams and fans understand what truly drives performance on the field.
One of the most talked‑about concepts is the definition of a hard‑hit ball. Statcast marks a batted ball as hard when its exit velocity reaches 95 mph or higher, a threshold that correlates strongly with extra‑base hits and power production.
Complementing that metric is the idea of an optimal launch angle. Events that leave the bat at eight to 32 degrees tend to travel the farthest, balancing lift and ground contact to maximize distance.
Beyond the Ball: Expected Outcomes
Metrics like xBA (expected batting average) estimate the likelihood that a particular batted ball will become a hit, while xwOBA refines that estimate by also factoring in exit velocity, launch angle and sprint speed. The resulting figure can be translated into an xERA, a direct analogue of traditional ERA for pitching performance.
Bat speed, measured at the sweet spot of the barrel, is another key indicator. A fast swing registers at least 75 mph of bat speed, and the vertical angle of that sweet spot’s travel — known as attack angle — helps determine whether a hitter is aiming for an ideal 5‑20 degree window.
Swing tilt captures the arc of the bat’s path in the 40 milliseconds before contact, revealing how steep or flat a swing is. When combined with exit velocity, these details feed into advanced stats such as EV50, which averages the hardest half of a batter’s repertoire.
Defensive contributions are equally data‑driven. Pop time gauges a catcher’s quickness in releasing the ball, while Jump highlights outfielders with the quickest reactions and most direct routes. On the bases, a runner who hits a sprint speed of 30 ft/sec or more is credited with a Bolt, underscoring elite speed in game‑changing situations.
Together, these metrics paint a fuller picture of player value, allowing analysts to move beyond traditional stats and appreciate the subtle forces that shape each play.
