The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s state baseball championship opens Monday in Carroll and Cedar Rapids, bringing together 32 teams from across the state in a bid for the coveted title. The opening day marks the start of a summer where the best high school talent will be tested on the diamond.
Among the contenders, a handful of players have emerged as focal points, their statistics reading like a who’s who of emerging talent. Cal Jepsen of Sioux City East arrives with a .508 average, 15 doubles, seven triples, six homers and 38 stolen bases, while Evan Schmierer of Iowa City Liberty boasts a .496 average and 40 steals. Lincoln Dalton of Pleasant Valley stands out on the mound with a 7‑1 record, 91 strikeouts and a 0.66 ERA.
The offensive firepower continues with George Blake of Indianola, batting .423 and driving in 41 runs, and Trevin Helming of Johnston, who has compiled 28 RBI and 17 steals. On the pitching side, Alex Williams of Southeast Polk has logged six wins and 85 strikeouts in over 50 innings, posting an ERA under two.
Other notable names include Lincoln Norris of Knoxville, whose .495 average pairs with a 0.64 ERA in 33 innings, and JP Elbert of Dubuque Wahlert Catholic, who contributes both bat and arm with a .392 average and two pitching wins. The depth of talent extends to players like Brady Rissman of Western Dubuque, who combines a .446 average with a 2.91 ERA and six wins.
The tournament also shines a spotlight on dominant pitchers such as Zander Murray of Cedar Rapids Xavier, who threw a postseason no‑hitter and maintains a 2.73 ERA, and Ty Heydon of Coon Rapids‑Bayard, whose .609 average is matched by a 1.35 ERA and 83 strikeouts. As the first round unfolds, the blend of hitting prowess and pitching excellence promises a championship race that could redefine high school baseball in Iowa.
