Paul Weir, the former coach of both the University of New Mexico Lobos and New Mexico State Aggies, has taken on a new role as president of St. Michael’s High School in Santa Fe. In this capacity he is spearheading efforts to boost enrollment and shape the school’s future.
Weir’s journey to the presidency began in 2007 when he arrived in New Mexico as an assistant coach at New Mexico State. He soon rose to head coach, guiding the Aggies to an NCAA tournament appearance and later leading the Lobos. His experience spans not only the sidelines but also administrative posts at Eastern New Mexico University and Abilene Christian University in Texas.
St. Michael’s, a 160‑year‑old institution, sits at the heart of a network of faith‑based schools that have struggled with declining enrollment and funding over the past two decades. Weir says the school must adapt while honoring its heritage, welcoming families who may not have generational ties to the community as Santa Fe evolves.
A Vision for the Future
“We want to embrace both the school’s past and its evolving future,” Weir explained, emphasizing a vision that blends tradition with new opportunities. He believes that by expanding its appeal, St. Michael’s can secure the resources needed to sustain its mission.
For Weir, New Mexico is more than a professional home; it is where he met his wife and where both of his sons were born. The state’s culture and landscape feel like home after nearly two decades of involvement.
